I get asked all the time how to take care of perennials. Once you get the container home, please water the container every day, until you get it planted. So the sooner, you get the perennial planted, the easier it becomes to take care of.
Make sure the soil is well worked up and add 1 heaping ice cream bucket of mushroom compost/perennial. Work the compost into the soil. Plant your perennial into this mixture. Then water well.
Mulch is always a benefit to any plant. We use double shredded bark or you can use more mushroom compost. Mushroom compost is non burning and adds many benefits to the plant/soil.
Keep the perennial moist. So a deep watering every 5-7 days. Don't let it get too dry If it wilts in the heat of summer, you probably are letting it get too dry. So water deep!! A good slow drink.
You can plant all summer and fall, it's the watering that becomes crucial for success.
Most people put their hoses away in September and call it a season. But your plants aren't done yet. They need to go into winter, wet.. The water helps insulate their roots.
You can cut back your perennials in the fall or spring. Also, a good layer of mulch is beneficial. Again, we use mushroom compost.
2023 Perennial of the year,
